Now it starts to make sense. Because for those who may not be saved they don’t know Christ so they don’t know what true happiness and joy IS! They haven’t experienced it! So what is happiness? And what is Joy? Happiness is defined simply as “luck” or “well fortune”. But the Bible defines happiness as much more than that. It’s not based on luck.
Happiness in a Biblical sense as defined in the Hebrew is “to be at rest” or “blessed”. Matthew 11:28 says, “Come to me all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest.” WHO is happy? The Bible displays “happy” people as those who fear the Lord. “Blessed are all who fear the Lord, who walk in obedience to him.” (Psalm 128:1) Those who keep His law are happy, blessed. In fact, it is impossible to be in a relationship with God without obeying His laws. “We know that we have come to know Him if we keep His commands.” (1 John 2:3) And finally, those who trust in the Lord are “happy”. “Whoever gives heed to instruction prospers and blessed is he who trusts in the Lord.” (Proverbs 16:20)
Joy is not emotion based. When our joy is in anyone or anything other than the Lord, it can be stolen because apart from God, it’s all temporal. But having joy in the Lord is not temporal. Happiness is a feeling based on emotions. We can be happy and in the next moment, not so happy. But true joy in the Lord is always.
So happiness may last for but a moment. It might come and go. But since joy comes from our Father, it does not fade away and is not temporal. And the joy of the Lord brings happiness. As I think of this, I think of how much those who don’t know Christ are really missing. A happy heart (and a joyful heart) can only come about through Christ. True joy and happiness comes from Christ being my Father, my personal Lord and Savior and my Strength. Because of this, my heart is truly happy, and because of that, my face is cheerful.
TO THE KING!!
