The Valley of Bones

It is a very scary thing to feel like you are “walking” but not “breathing.”  You go to work, come home, sleep…just to go through the cycle all over again.  This past week, like many weeks, was a struggle…but for very different reasons.  In short, I felt I was wasting quite a bit of my time on things that were not part of my purpose.  And for a brief moment…I did not want to be here.  My earthly father’s message to me earlier in the week got me through.  My dad didn’t even know I was going through at the time–he was actually calling about something completely unrelated.  Somehow, his conversation took a a turn and he directed me to Ezekiel 37:1-10.

Ezekiel was led by the Holy Spirit to a valley of bones.  The Lord asked Ezekiel, “Son of man, can these bones live?”  Ezekiel simply replied “O Sovereign Lord, you alone know.”  What the Lord said is frankly why I am writing to someone, if it is just one, today:

“Prophesy (speak the future) to the bones and say to them, ‘Dry bones, hear the word of the LORD!  This is what the Sovereign LORD says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life.  I will attach tendons to you and make flesh come upon you and cover you with skin; I will put breath in you, and you will come to life.  Then you will know that I am the LORD.”

Ezekiel did as he was commanded, and AS he was prophesying (not before or after, but literally while he was speaking to the bones), he heard a noise…a rattling sound…and all the bones came together…followed by the tendons and flesh…and skin.

But still no breath.

God told Ezekiel to prophesy this time to the winds so that breath and life can now fill what was once dead.  Ezekiel did just that.  And he was standing with the once dead…which became an army.

What is my point?

I recognized that I had been walking in a valley of bones for a long time.  So many dreams, visions, thoughts, and works were like the bones…and I walked around giving artificial life to those things, people, relationships, that should have been dead!  But what a MIGHTY GOD we serve that HE can make what feels dead in our life COME ALIVE!  That if we speak with His power and through His authority, He can put flesh to old and meat to things we thought were lost.  Maybe it is that book you have been thinking about.  Or how about that movie?  You probably envisioned making a cd?  Or maybe being a minister.  Recognize that those bones are not dead!  SPEAK INTO THEM! And then ASK for “BREATH” and energy to enter them.

My dad ended our phone call by saying this: Nothing else matters but your purpose.  If you spend your life entertaining those things which are not Godly…which do not bring life…then you are never going to truly live.  Life is not in a “friend” or a “man” or in “riches.”  Life is in the bones.  Think on those things that you thought were lost…and prophesy life into them NOW.  And allow those things that need to die…die.

Life is good.  So live it.

“So many dreams, visions, thoughts, and works were like the bones…and I walked around giving artificial life to those things, people, relationships, that should have been dead!” I just had a chit chat w/ a friend about this exact issue. WOW. I’m in utter shock right now. I basically told her this: What’s crazy is that people will actually find an excuse…reasons not to follow through w/ God’s work, but will MAKE the TIME to do everything (and/or everyone) their selfish heart desires. That’s how wicked we truly are in our hearts…even as hard as we strive, we are in a constant battle w/ our flesh. Many of the things God CALLS us to do is not always fun or even what we WANT to do, but b/c of our love and honor for Him, we answer when He calls! He doesn’t call us for idol things. He has a goal which is ultimately part of His overall plan. It’s up to us to see it through to reap it’s harvest.
Thank you for this introspective and beautiful word today. AGAPE.

You hit so much with your comment sis. It is a hard thing to admit and accept that some of our actions and thoughts are wicked–which simply means counter to the righteousness of God. We can be so destructive to ourselves and others without meaning to. But, the CALL of Christ doesn’t end just because we “killed it.” What we consider dead, God considers “resting.” I am done resting on His purpose on my life…thanks for responding.

Reblogged this on The BOLD & The FABULOUS and commented:

I didn’t think I could do it: being hit by a cab while walking (on Resurrection Sunday) surely slowed me down a little…but not all the way. I thought my submission dreams for a film competition couldn’t be done. Well…despite the circumstances, mission accomplished. On this Throwback Thursday let’s reflect on God’s ability to bring life to what we thought was dead. #IfyThursdays
