I can’t seem to wrap my brain around the mass shooting that occurred in Aurora, Colorado this past week. I mean, to be forced to think about the true evil that exists in this world can be a very scary thought, especially for someone who doesn’t have the comfort of knowing the God I know. I, as I’m sure many of us have been, am consumed with media reports and water cooler conversations that detail how James Holmes, the attacker, premeditated this entire ordeal with strategic care and pinpoint precision. Wow. Holmes understood, without limitation or reservation, that he would enter a movie theater that night, and claim the lives of anyone he wanted including children. THAT is certainly the work of evil. What I realized after hearing about this incredibly somber story over and over again, is that 1. the devil is real, if anyone ever doubted his power before, and 2. It’s time we as Christians stand our ground and stand up to the devil and all his forces.
The Bible says in many instances, but particularly in John 10:10, that the enemy comes to “steal, kill, and destroy” and in Ephesians 6:12 we are told “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” Ladies and gentleman, we are living in a time where evil has been unmasked and is more confident and more aggressive than ever before. The devil is hard at work to claim the lives of as many as he can and then stand proud at the public recognition he receives in doing so. The enemy wants us to fear him, fear leaving our homes, fear going to the theater, fear LIVING out the will of God because of threats against us. God told me to tell you today that FEAR is not of God in any way, shape, or form. In fact the Bible says in 2 Timothy 1:7, “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”
This is the time to be prayed up and fluent in God’s word. This is the time to be covered by the blood of Christ and not be afraid to plead the blood in times where the enemy shows his disgusting face. I refuse to let the enemy win. Period. And you should too. So arm yourselves with weapons such as prayer and His word and be ready to fight when he comes to your doorstep (if he hasn’t been already).
I leave you with Ephesians 6: 13-18:
Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.
