SHE’S GOT HER OWN!

Before I start with my Wednesday topic, I want to start with a scripture I read today. Luke 6:38 Give, & it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.
I have noticed that we (America) as a culture seem to be fixated on the idea of making it & getting through this life, on our own and in doing so, you officially have the right to hold your head up high! Independent WomenI Can Do Bad All By MyselfI Love Her Cause She Got Her OwnI’m Every Woman It’s All In MEEEEI Will SurviveI’mma Do MEIt’s All About MeAnything You Can Do I Can Do BetterOn My Own — …and the list of cliches goes on.
We are one of THE ONLY CULTURES in the whole world with this I DON’T NEED NOBODY mindset. For example: In Addis Ababa, Ethiopia…a place I have frequented lately… it is an honor for extended families to live together. 1Corinthians 12:14 The body is not one member but manyEveryone is focused on pulling one another up by pooling/sharing their money & resources in order to propel the whole family into a better place. Shoot…they even eat off of the same large plate…LITERALLY! It’s actually unusual if parents don’t live in the home of the grown children, to assist them with their children and be loved on and honored as they approach their elder years. This does happen in America, but it is almost looked at as a negative… “They must be having hard times if they need to live with all those people.” “No way. I need MY OWN space.” “Just put her in a home. They can take better care of her than we can.”
Hebrews 13:16 Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.
In general, our negative view of depending on one another has created a lot of separation, division, and a false sense of security in OURSELVES and our own capabilities. I am preaching to myself here. I have always been one who has hustled hard in life, along with my husband, to be assured we never have to lean on anyone but ourselves. There were times in the past where pooling resources with other family could’ve been an ideal situation for everyone involved, but the pride of standing our ground…proving that we could do it with no help, was a stumbling block to our growth on some levels, early on in the marriage. God always provides. He always makes a way out of no way. He always teaches us lessons and loves us into shape!!! BUT, God also provides His people. He provides them as help, as fellowship, as family, as friends…He did not just put us here for ourselves but to be a gift to one another. Accepting & utilizing His gift(s) pleases Him.
1Timothy 5:8 But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
Remember, there is no rule against requesting and accepting help, -or- giving of yourself, your home, your finances or resources. We are all equally important to God and in His grace, we are equipped to strengthen one another in love!
Philippians 2:4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.

  1. What an awesome article! Thanks for taking the time to write and post this.

  2. Nsenga says:

Thoughtful and provocative. Two thumbs up!!!

  3. Indeed we live in a society where individualism trumps collectivism. This is in opposition to our African heritage as recently as early life of Black Americans from slavery through the 50’s and 60’s. A subject/topic worth more discourse. Thanks for the post!

  4. Of the Ethiopian family (and extended family I’m sure), and yours!

Whew! This one right here was just for me! Mad it took me so long to read it but I believe I’m reading it on just the right day! Pride is killer. I deal with it EVERYDAY!! Thanks for sharing this love! Powerful and so true! ~ Bianca

Great read! I think this was meant for me.

I’m really late here Sherrell, but I’m so glad to hear it was a blessing to you. It’s always great to get confirmation of what God put on my heart for any given week. Thanx sis.
